Red Light Therapy Benefits: A Solution for Hair Loss?

Hair loss is quite an ordinary problem, and is prevalent among a large number of people across the globe. Although there are several different treatments available to address this concern, red light therapy benefits have gained much importance among discourse, due to its claim to promote hair growth and the health of the hair in a non-surgical, gentle manner. In this article, we discuss the use of red light treatment for hair loss through a case study approach, followed by its working mechanisms, effectiveness, and some applications.

Mechanisms and Effectiveness

Low-level light therapy (LLLT) – also known as red light therapy – is a non-invasive process that employs low-power light in the red to near-infrared range in stimulating hair growth. Though the exact mechanisms of LLLT aren’t completely apparent, a study published in the Southern Medical Journal in 2010 states that reception of this light helps to improve blood flow and reduce inflammation in the area, which in turn increases the growth of hair follicles and texture.

A study by Ghanaat, M. (2012) stated that low-level light therapy has been used to treat various forms of hair loss, including male pattern hair loss, female pattern hair loss, telogen effluvium, and post-transplantation surgery.

Several studies indicate that LLLT improves hair growth, particularly in cases of male pattern hair loss and alopecia areata, an autoimmune condition that targets the hair follicles in the body - resulting in patchy baldness. For instance, a placebo-controlled pilot study published in the International Journal of Cosmetic Surgery and Aesthetic Dermatology in 2009 found that LLLT treatments led to improved hair counts and tensile strength (quantifying the strength of the hair to withstand traction) in male and female patients. The greatest improvement in hair counts was found in the temporal and vertex regions.

Case Study: Photobiomodulation Therapy for Alopecia Areata

A case study on photobiomodulation therapy (PBMT), also called red-light therapy with continuous wave red laser (660 nm) as monotherapy for alopecia areata, using the same laser system and delivery format, was published recently in the Journal of Lasers in Medical Sciences. The study reported successful trials on hair growth in a 31-year-old woman with alopecia areata, after daily sessions of PBMT with a 660 nm laser. Significant hair regrowth was noted within 7 days of her treatment, and her aesthetic concern was completely resolved within 21 days.

Key Takeaways - Red Light Therapy Benefits For Hair Loss

The bottom line proposes that Red light therapy benefits hair loss, and is a relatively safe approach in increasing hair health, supporting hair re-growth for both men and women. Despite LLLT being unlikely to have negative side effects, more research is needed to determine the mechanisms of action and optimisation of regimen and use. However, presently available data suggests that LLLT can be an effective adjunct or standalone treatment for multiple different types of hair loss.
